报告摘要:Chromosomes are segregated in all dividing eukaryotic cells and are the basis for genetic inheritance. In somatic cell division, replicated chromosomes are equally divided to daughter cells, whereas in germ cells chromosome numbers are reduced from diploid cells to produce haploid gametes. Over the last two decades, we have discovered key factors and mechanisms that regulate chromosome segregation in meiosis. In particular, we have found and characterized the Rec8 cohesin complex and its regulators shugoshin and meikin, which together play a central role in establishing reductional chromosome segregation in meiosis [1]. Our discovery that the Rec8 mutant causes the shift from reductional to equational division at meiosis I [2], has been applied to develop apomixis technology in crop species [3]. Thus, our findingsare contributing to practical advances in agriculture and food production.
